Method of Contextualising
22nd FEB l Week 2
Each of us became a photographer and shot 360-degree street views through the way GSV by mimicking, and based on that footage, we set up three different personas. The final video format, which can be operated by mouse drag, allows viewers to interact.
Based on the assumption of how GSV, which can seem neutral, can have various perspectives, we tried to put GSV in a new context and to make it a project that presents the new discourse.
Through using a new 360 camera angle, we created new personas and arrange the voice commentary to humanize the way of footage that street view documented. This work highlights the fact that street view does in personal privacy more than what people think. Our position was to try to provoke people to change the perspective about Google Street View as intrusive media rather than a faceless tool by this project.
Persona1 shows a natural perspective by collecting various comments from GSV’s review and showing the majority of opinions on the place. Persona2 and 3 express the perspective of the photographer who is filming. The only difference between them is that persona 2 is based on the viewpoint of the device observing what is happening in front of the lens, and persona 3 is in the viewpoint of the individual walking through the place.
> Publication:
Publication, which organizes these videos, also consists of three parts with three different forms, such as transparent paper, roulette table-game, and the personal diary. It is used to further clarify the personas in the video.
Persona 1: Since Persona 1’s comment is based on Google StreetView’s review, we printed them into transparent cling film. It’s presenting a neutral perspective by pointing out accessible information on Google StreetView. And the same time, the overlapped images and comments indicate the massive information on Google Street View.

Persona 2: Persona 2 is based on the perspective of the photographer. Just as the photographer observe and commented in the video, we made a table game to match the right comments and images.

Persona 3: Persona 3 is containing a photographer’s perspective. But it’s more personal than Persona 2. Following the comments, we made this publication part as a personal diary of the photographer.

Feedback:
_ What’s working?
. Position come through in the three videos, successfully creating a persona
. Last video(persona 3) is particularly interesting
_ What’s not working?
. Video is strong enough alone maybe, don’t necessarily need the publication
. Materiality of first part of publication is great though and adds to the understanding of the message.
_ Further process?
. Try more gaps in commentary so not constantly speaking
. Adding text into the video alongside the pop up images, where the text is happening
. Different ways of presenting the publication
. Could have opposing narration to what is being shown on screen
. Strongest video combined with publication is the neutral commentary and overlaying of reviews and images
. Could be a stronger project if the same video footage was used for all three videos but have different voiceovers showing different perspectives.
