Unit 01: Method of Iterating_01

JAN 18th l Method of Iterating 01

7 Iterations

Method / Tool : Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D(C4D) is the 3D program widely used by designers to make their images and ideas into 3D outcomes. Same as all other 3D programs, they are generally used to make specific, already-designed shapes. And the ‘Deformer’, one of the popular functions of C4D, is used to make those shapes more easily.

Content for the starting point: Translation of the idea of ‘gravity’

‘Why do humans look like this? Why are arms, legs, fingers, and bodies stretched out long without being rounded or angled?’

The answer to the previous question lies in ‘gravity’. Planets and stars in space are round in shape because gravity is at the center of each of them. On the other hand, gravity is a powerful force that works from top to bottom for humans, small creatures on Earth. Therefore, human arms, legs, and bodies are all shaped like cylinders.

Deformer

I focused on the core idea that the shape of our body is influenced by a huge external power. Therefore, I thought this idea could be translated into something with the function of C4D. And what I chose finally was ‘Deformer’.

Deformer is one of the functions that is generally used to make complex shapes easily and also to make them move. By applying this ‘deformer’ function, the shape of objects could be shifted.

The functions with blue icons are the ‘deformer’ in C4D

I chose 7 different Deformers and applied them to a sphere which is one of the basic modeling shapes of C4D. I made 5 different shapes per every 7 Deformers.

In the process of rendering, which is the final stage at C4D to save the image, I set two different rendering settings and also added two other materials to see how their shape can images could be perceived by rendering styles and materials.

From the left, 1)Basic renderer & C4D Basic material / 2)Sketch and Toon renderer / 3) Basic Renderer & Metal(material) / 4) Basic Renderer & Rock(material)

All 35 iterations going to be shown as the chart beneath.

. Left -> Right: This shows the degree of strength or angle of the Deformers.
. Top -> Bottom: Shows 1 to 7 iterations based on each different Deformers.

_2. Sketch and Toon Rendering

_3. Basic Rendering & Metal(Artificial Material)

_4. Basic Rendering & Rock(Natural Material)

Critical Inquiries :

Could the rendered object be considered as ‘designed images’? Could each final image be seen as the same object if they are rendered with different settings and eventually come out into different shapes? If we render these 3d objects into 2d images, then which should we consider as 2d or 3d? Since these rendered images don’t have any intentions with their shape, what is the meaning that these images have and how these can be used?
