Positions Through Triangulating: Studio Work_03

Following the feedback from the previous week, I moved on to find the dualistic relationships on the various screens. And as a starting point, I focused on the original meaning of ‘screen’ and tried to find the reason why we use the word ‘screen’ for all different kinds of screens throughout history.

The meaning of the word ‘screen’:

  1. n. a flat surface in a cinema, on television, or as part of a computer, on which pictures or words are shown n. a vertical structure that is used to separate one area from another especially to hide something or to protect you from something unpleasant or dangerous
  2. 2. v. an activity that is not dangerous or illegal but is used to hide something that is
  3. v. to protect or hide

The word ‘screen’ itself has a double-sidedness(dualistic relationship)

One example of the usage of ‘screen’, is we call the textile for the projection ‘screen’ because as a perspective from the light, the white textile is blocking the light and making the image reflected on it.

Based on these ideas, I tried to play with the various dualistic relationships. As a very beginning experiment, I played with the white textile, light, and my hand. on the side with the light, the light shows the hand itself clearly, but on the other side of the textile, the light is blocked by the hand and I could only see the shape of the hand as a shadow.
